A close-up of a carlina, the photo exposure was forced
Campo di Giove, Abruzzo, August 11, 2013. Close-up of a carlina acanthifolia from the Abruzzo Apennines; in Italy this plant is also called “zolfina.” It appears to be a single flower that, partly because of its sulfur-yellow color, resembles a sun with its rays. In reality, it is an inflorescence composed of a central “capolino (little head)”, with many small flowers, and an aureole of spiny leaves that serves to protect the central part. It grows in mountainous areas and can reach up to 15 cm in width.
